MWCA 2018 Predictions

After over a decade of attending the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, our team will join Mobile World Congress Americas for the first time. An event expected to draw an attendance of around 25,000 people, about a fourth of the size of its big brother, but with over 1,000 exhibitors nonetheless.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO SEE AT MWCA

This year’s event has been titled ‘Imagine a Better Future’ and we will be part of painting that picture being featured in the NEXTech zone in the West Hall (booth W.511 – see more information below).

The five main event themes give you a good sense of what you can hope to hear more about at MWCA:

  • Innovation; how committing to continuous experimentation drives improved outcomes
  • The 4thIndustrial Revolution; how mobile and automation will be and already is affecting all aspects of our lives
  • Everything Policy; how governments, network operators, and other policy-makers can and need to enable change in the digital age
  • Media & Entertainment; how media consumption is evolving, both for end-users and creators
  • The Network; how 5G and other network technologies are opening up new business opportunities

As always, the effect of most technology promises made at conferences like this one are not likely to be seen in the real world for another three to five years, but what’s exciting about MWCA is that a large part of the technologies covered already have a version 1.0 in the market today. We’re not talking about when you can start putting in orders for a flying car, but rather what we can learn from the first smart city implementations.

The list of buzzwords and most talked about topics will of course include the usual suspects (5G, AI, AR/VR, IoT, and all types of personal assistants).

Here’s what you can expect to see more of at MWCA:

  • Everything 5G. From its effect on latency in autonomous cars to the new 5G phone announced by Sprint and LG, brace yourself for lots of discussions around the next generation telecommunication standard. Somewhat fitting seeing that Los Angeles, the city hosting the event, is one of the first names on Sprint’s 5G rollout roadmap (5G subscriptions is expected to account for almost half of all mobile subscriptions in North America by the end of 2023 according to the Ericsson Mobility Report, June 2018).
  • Edge Computing. The real-time image recognition by LG and Huawei leveraging edge computing and AI mentioned in our Top 5 Takeaways from MWC18 demonstrated how the technology will be a game changer. We hope to see more use cases in the automation space for businesses as well as in AR/MR for entertainment.
  • Intelligent Connectivity. Described as the intersection between 5G, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, intelligent connectivity will be a big part of the GSMA Innovation City. The space will include a wide range of examples of the same, including remote patient monitoring, real-time AI for road safety, and the future of intelligent car manufacturing.
  • Other. Anticipate to get plenty of new ideas and examples around a wide array of other topics including blockchain, security, digital kids and parenting, drones, and much, much more.

Speaking Panel

From Automotive Manufacturer to Smart Mobility Service Provider
Friday, September 14th, 12:15-1:00pm EST

Over the past months, the term “cell phone on wheels” has been attributed to the new wave of connected vehicles. However, it is becoming clear that it is much more than that. The surge of new car companies challenging the incumbents, and the revolution in new in-vehicle technology has created a scenario in which automotive OEMs need to reconsider their structure, and become a digital company as well as a manufacturer. The session will focus on this transition, and the importance of collaboration between the cellular and automotive ecosystems to deliver the vehicle of the future.

We hope to see you there!
