Challenge

The university, which had maintained its own servers and networks since inception, was feeling increasingly limited by its infrastructure finding it difficult to scale and expensive to maintain.

To solve for this, they sought a solution that could provide more flexibility, speed and reliability to support their vast range of services and courses while also including disaster recovery planning and a high level of security.

Additionally, they wanted to shift from a CapEx model to a “pay as you go” OpEx model leveraging the cloud.

Solution

This project coincided with a physical campus move. In order to minimize IT service disruption, the on-premises cloud migration was conducted as efficiently as possible.

DMI’s dedicated migration team began by recommending the best suited cloud migration strategies and use cases for the business to maximize the full benefits of the cloud.

They carefully mapped all dependencies and created a migration plan to ensure service disruption would be minimized.

The team built a strawman server migration plan based on strategic decisions, tested its viability, and rapidly iterated. They then settled on a cloud migration plan that used a phased cutover approach, enabling them to test parts of the migration by replicating servers in the Azure cloud before committing the final server migration.
