Client Intro
In late 2021, one state’s department of health faced a serious ransomware attack that took key systems offline. With staff unable to access laptops or internal networks, the department turned to DMI for help recovering operations quickly and securely.
Challenge
In December 2021, a ransomware attack forced the state health department to shut down its websites and internal systems. The incident disrupted Medicaid applications, nursing home safety resources, and COVID-19 data reporting.
While the department isolated the threat early, they needed help restoring access by scanning, cleaning, or replacing thousands of remote laptops. With limited internal resources and pressure to restore services quickly, the department partnered with DMI to lead a large-scale device recovery effort.
Solution
DMI set up operations at the state health department’s headquarters and handled the laptop remediation project. The team staffed a project manager and technical specialists to coordinate employee appointments, recover devices, and deploy new or reimaged laptops.
To restore safe and reliable access, the DMI team connected each device to a secure network, scanned it for vulnerabilities, updated it with required software agents, and tested each device before return. DMI also helped department employees log in to their devices and guided them through issues that arose.
In total, DMI supported thousands of employees over a six-month period and worked closely with the department to keep the process running smoothly. This approach ensured they met security standards without delaying service recovery.

Impact
DMI helped the state health department recover quickly and minimize downtime during a critical time for public health. By successfully scanning, reconfiguring, and distributing laptops, the team helped more than 3,500 employees return to work safely and efficiently. Public services like Medicaid processing, COVID-19 reporting, and nursing home oversight resumed without long-term disruption.
To ensure continuity, DMI followed the department’s security protocols and provided onsite and remote support. This effort not only restored access—it gave the department the confidence and infrastructure they needed to bounce back from a cyber-attack with minimal operational loss.
