The Challenge

The aftermarket business of a manufacturing company needed to more effectively manage prices of thousands of products in several regions, but was unable to do so due to their sluggish off-the-shelf pricing system and interfaces with other legacy systems. The pricing system took multiple hours or days to process required calculations. Without question, the client needed a useful system that was also flexible and economical… but was unsure if they could afford the cost of a new system implementation.

Our Insight

We started by evaluating three different solutions - keeping in mind requirements, implementation time, and total investment cost. Microsoft Business Intelligence (BI) tools appeared to be the best fit; however, we needed to prove the viability in the client's environment. In order to showcase the tools capabilities, we created a distributed model including a self-service BI environment.

Based on the Microsoft BI stack, the new system leverages Excel as a familiar client tool and provides enhanced analytical capabilities. SQL Server Master Data Services (MDS), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), and SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) work as complimentary technologies to deliver a robust, integrated solution. Improved controls, user alerts, and audit capabilities provide a closed-loop system with new functionality over the legacy application.

Results

Within 4 months, the new solution replaced an unusable pricing system and an old reporting system that were 10x the cost and 70% slower. The new solution delivered world-class performance by drastically reducing processing time from days and hours to minutes and seconds.
