Fast forward to 2020, and the world was faced with a global pandemic which brought a swift end to social gatherings, which included art exhibitions and events. An ability to quickly adapt was no longer just an advantage, it was a necessity

Having established trust as the digital partner of MCH Group, Art Basel approached DMI with their vision of how to transcend the physical gallery space. Using the robust and scalable digital platform that we have been developing, DMI brought the “Online Viewing Room” (OVR) to life through UX and UI design collaboration.

THE OUTCOME

First, DMI migrated all Art Basel software and infrastructure from monolithic to microservices architecture, while also detaching api-coupled dependencies between front-end components (website) and mobile (iOS and Android native apps).
We provided a step-by-step migration process with retro-compatibility. As a result, we improved error isolation, traceability, and independent horizontal scalability.

THE BENEFITS

DMI delivered a fully automated workflow, enabling seamless integration of each step of the OVR process. From exhibitor applications to end user experience, no detail was left unnoticed.
Art Basel was then able to take the OVR show online, with the debut of an all-online Art Basel Miami 2020. Thousands of artworks were sold, and the event received global praise.
